We had another fantastic day on Old Forge Mountain that ended with one of my favorite camp traditions…Talent Show! Performing on stage at Talent Show is more than just a moment in the spotlight; it’s a powerful learning experience that fosters growth, confidence, and camaraderie. Every performance, whether it’s a choreographed dance, a skit, a comedy routine or a vocal performance, teaches campers valuable life lessons that go beyond the applause.
I watched tonight as many brave campers graced the stage alone or with their cabin, mustering the courage to be vulnerable while letting their gifts shine for all of camp to see. Tonight we had mime performers, Fergie’s National Anthem lip sync, an incredible solo dance routine, gymnasts, a circus, a recorder act, a day in the life of camp skit, vocal talent and more. The most beautiful part was the response of the audience - they sang along to the vocal performances, clapped to the beat of the music, waved their arms in the air and offered incredible support with standing ovations and overwhelming cheers for every act! The smiles on the faces of each performer as they walked off stage radiated confidence and pride, a gift that could only come from a Camp Highlander crowd!
Favorite Details of The Day
- Reflect: This morning at Reflect, Spencer, our Program Director, gave his last reflect of the summer. He said that every time he has spoken at reflect, he has been so nervous. His hands start to shake and he worries about messing up. This morning when he was preparing for reflect, he decided to throw his plan away and just talk to his friends. He reminded himself that there is no need to be nervous because at camp he is surrounded not by people, but by family who love him and accept him, flaws and all…not just Spencer, all of us! What a timely message for our talent show tonight!
- Weather: Our day began with cloudy skies, cool temperatures, and the promise of rain in the air. As we STILL have not had a full rainy day, the campers were sure that this would be our first. But, the morning was nice and sunny. We did have intermittent showers starting in third period through EP tonight.
- Meals: For breakfast this morning we had warm, gooey cinnamon rolls, scrambled eggs, sausage links, oatmeal, grits and a fresh fruit bar. For lunch we had roast been french dip sandwiches and tater tots, a salad bar and a sandwich bar. Dinner was a huge HIT…Papa John’s pizza and salad bar and Gus’ for dessert!
- EP: Tonight’s EP was Talent Show and it was amazing!
