We had another awesome day at Camp Highlander, and after a super busy week this day was exactly what we needed. We gratefully slept in til 9:00 this morning and woke up to the beautiful sunshine beaming on Old Forge. We soaked it up all morning for chapel, camp clean up and free time before lunch. Just as the last camper settled into their cabin for rest hour, we heard the distant rumble of thunder, quickly followed by a refreshing downpour. The rain provided a soothing serenade that lulled us all to sleep for an extra-long rest hour. It was a delightful and much-needed break, allowing everyone to recharge and rejuvenate for the exciting week ahead. This slow-paced and simple Sunday was a true gift, offering us the perfect balance of relaxation and reflection amidst the hustle and bustle of camp life.
CHAPEL
For Chapel this morning we read the book What Do You Do with a Problem? by Kobi Yamada. We talked about looking at problems as opportunities - opportunities to grow, learn and understand ourselves and others around us.
MEALS
Breakfast this morning was blueberry muffins, sausage links, scrambled eggs and our fresh fruit, yogurt and granola bar. Lunch was grilled chicken club sandwiches, waffle fries and a salad bar. For dinner we had roasted turkey, haricot verts, mashed potatoes and homemade rolls with our sandwich and salad bar.
SUNDAY FUNDAY
After a longer rest hour today, the bell rang and campers were SO excited to see the Dolly’s Trolley waiting for them at the gym. It was still raining pretty hard, so for our Sunday Funday afternoon activity we watched a movie! The division heads had set up stations in the back of the gym for kids who wanted to get fairy hair, play UNO, card games, color or make friendship bracelets. Some campers read books, some fell asleep, some laughed out loud while watching the movie and some just enjoyed socializing with their friends. Everyone LOVED their ice cream, and it was a great way to spend a rainy Sunday on Old Forge.
EVENING PROGRAM
Our evening program tonight was campfire. Normally I would hate being rained out of our outdoor campfire, but tonight campfire was absolutely perfect. Bruce, our beloved and talented camp musician who plays each week, closed campfire tonight and said these campers put on the best campfire he has had all summer. The campers were on their feet for almost every single song, fast or slow they were dancing, swaying and making the most of the memories with their friends. We sang along to the music and soaked up every minute of this wonderful tradition. After campfire, the gym went crazy when I said head up to the dining hall for cookies and milk! I love ending our night with this wonderful tradition of comfort and community. Campers gather with cabin mates and friends from different cabins to laugh and chat, which I find so refreshing and wonderful. Kids today don’t talk enough, and I am so grateful that at camp we spend lots of time talking and socializing, letting our kids practice this skill of connecting with friends rather than a phone!
