While there is no such thing as a perfect day, life at camp today was almost picture perfect. We woke up this morning to a cool breeze in the air that brought campers snuggled in sweatshirts down to Reflect at the Rock. The sun quickly warmed the mountain and set the perfect backdrop for a day full of activities and fun!
I was thrilled to see how our cabins have effortlessly settled into a rhythm and routine today. While we have many returning campers this session, it was incredibly heartwarming to witness the new friendships blossoming and the inclusivity extended to every new camper. It’s a testament to the welcoming spirit of Camp Highlander.
Just like our campers, who are bravely stepping out of their comfort zones and learning new skills, I am also embracing a new challenge this summer—photography. Throughout the day, I’ve been spontaneously picking up the camera to try and capture the magic of camp from behind the lens. While the photos our talented photographers share are wonderful, I’ve come to realize that they can’t capture the entire story. The true essence of Camp Highlander, the profound impact it has on the hearts of our campers, is something that transcends any photograph. It’s a story of growth, friendship, and unforgettable experiences that lives within each camper…that’s practically perfect!
Favorite Details of the Day
- Reflect at the Rock: This morning Mac talked to us about age being just a number, and life being about more than age. Life is really measured not by the number of years or the number of breaths you take, it is truly measured by the number of moments that take your breath away. Camp is full of those moments that take our breath away and remind us how blessed we are to be on Old Forge this summer!
- Weather: As I write this, the campers are snuggled in blankets in their beds, maybe wearing sweatshirts due to the brisk temperature and cool breeze that has blessed our day and our night. Today’s high was 82 degrees and the low is 60 degrees. We had the brightest sunshine today, but the breeze made every single moment of today breathtaking. If every day were this perfect, we would likely not appreciate the gift that this weather is…so we are beyond grateful and enjoying this practically perfect day of weather!
- Meals: For breakfast we had biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage patties, oatmeal, grits and a fruit bar. For lunch we had turkey and cheese ciabatta sandwichesi, Miss Vickie’s chips and a salad bar with whole fruit. For dinner we had grilled flank steak, rosemary roasted potatoes, haricot verts and warm homemade rolls and a salad and sandwich bar. YUM!
- EP: Tonight’s evening program was Hogwart’s Haunt. We had a Harry Potter themed fun house that was put on by our 2024 CIT class that cabin went through. Afterwards there was a candy station they went to before joining a big Harry Potter dance party in the gym. Everyone LOVED the fun house, and we are so proud of the CITs for all the hard work they put into making this night so fun for our campers. I loved all the costumes and the creativity of our campers tonight. The dance party was a huge hit, and everyone loved all the line dances from the WOBBLE to the CHURCH CLAP!
