Today was AMAZING! We were SO excited to greet our Session A campers and families this morning, and while the sky was overcast at 8:00 this morning, our campers brought the sunshine as each smiling face ran through the tunnel to join our camp family! I loved every minute of visiting with so many of you today, meeting new campers and parents and seeing familiar faces.

Right after rest hour today, our last group of campers arrived from the airport. In a matter of minutes, they joined their cabinmates and off the campers went to enjoy the afternoon of activities with their new friends. The sun was shining and everyone jumped right into camp life. About half way into 4th period, we had a pop up shower with no thunder or lightning which did not slow us down. I went down to the land sports field and watched cabins playing riverball, campers having water gun fights at LAX and a muddy game of soccer.

This is camp! This is what we do…rain or shine, we don’t care! We came here to have fun with friends and that is what we did today…even in the rain. I love that our campers and staff chose to embrace the day with all it had to offer as the rain came pouring down. As a camp director, I don’t love having rain, but on days like today I am reminded that rain doesn’t define camp…campers do! And today their positive attitudes and playful spirits reminded me that their definition of Camp Highlander even on the raining days is… “A Place Like No Other.”

Thank you so much for sharing your children with us this session. We are honored to share the gift of camp with them over the next two weeks. We look forward to giving you a window into our world through this blog and through the photos each day. If day one is any indication, we are destined for a super fun session!

Favorite Details of the Day

  • YOUR CHILDREN!!! WE LOVE THEM!!!
  • Weather: Sunshine in the morning and pop up shower in the afternoon. Right as the bell for campfire rang, we heard thunder in the distance and the rain started again.
  • Meals: Our Opening Day tradition for lunch is grilled cheese and tomato soup. Today we added something new to the tradition…french fries, and the campers were SO EXCITED about french fries. As always, we had a full salad bar, sandwich bar and whole fruit available as well. For dinner we had pot roast with carrots and potatoes, homemade rolls and a salad bar. When the disco ball went off, we all got up to dance the cupid shuffle in the dining hall before enjoying the BEST desssert - Highlander Mudslide. YUM!
  • EP: Tonight’s EP was our Opening Day tradition…Campfire. Due to the rain, we all gathered in the gym for campfire and enjoyed singing and dancing to our favorite songs wtih our friends! It rained so hard in campfire, we could feel the mist inside the gym! It was crazy but something we will all remember. We turned up the speakers and kept on dancing!
