I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day! What could make me feel this way…campers! They are the sunshine when the sun refuses to shine, and I am so so happy they are here! The smiles, the hugs and the laughter could make even the darkest day seem bright!
Even though the skies were overcast today and we had a the occassional sprinkle, the campers brought the sunshine and didn’t miss a beat in their day. From dressing up in drama for improv and laughs, to flying high on the zipline, today was full of fun, with or without the sun!
I love the way the first few days of camp teach us about resiliency. Maybe it’s the weather or the activity that isn’t exaclty what we would hope for, but it is in these moments that our campers are learning how to move through the emotions they may feel to an attitude that they choose. They learn to not let what is happening define their happiness, but to choose their attitude in spite of their circumstances. Campers practice this life skill of resiliency every single day at camp. They adpot a positive attitude about their day from observing the positive example of their counselors. At Highlander, we believe that the greatest gift of our day is not WHAT we are doing, but WHO we are doing it with. When we see our positive and encouraging camp counselors dancing in the rain, we learn to see obstacles and opportunities and make the most of every moment. These are the days of building resiliencey in our campers and changing their lives forever.
Today I am reminded that camp gives kids a world of good, even when the skies are gray!
Favorite Details of the Day
- Reflect: Mac talked about life being a reflection of our actions. If you want to see more love in the world, create more love in your heart. If you want more unity in your cabin, focus on your teamwork. Life gives you back everything that you give to it.
- Meals: Our day began with warm buttermilk biscuits, sausage patties, scrambled eggs and a fresh fruit bar. For lunch we had grilled chicken club sandwiches with sweet potato fries and salad bar. For dinner, we had delicious pork chops with roasted broccoli, mashed potatoes and kale salad.
- Weather: We had some overcast skies today, which gave us cooler temperatures. There were a few showers during the day, but no thunder or lightning which means the activities go on! Sometimes the rain makes everything more fun!
- EP: HOOOOOWDY! Tonight was the first square dance of the summer. The entire camp put on their dancing boots and cowboy hats and gathered in the gym for a wonderful night of dancing. We danced the macarena, do-si-doed partners and line danced until we collapsed. It was a fantastic night!
