Favorite Details of the Day (Sunday)

  • Chapel: Sunday’s chapel was about turning problems into opportunities. When you choose to see your problem as an opportunity, you experience growth and a new perspective. We read the book “What do you do with a Problem?,” by Kobi Yamada.
  • Meals: Breakfast was assorted muffins, scrambled eggs, bacon, oatmeal, grits and fruit bar. For lunch we had grilled cheese, tomato soup and salad bar. For dinner, we had chicken fettuccine alfredo, haricot verts, breadsticks and Italian salad.
Weather: We had sunshine all day and a slight rain shower that hit us at the end of the day, just enough to cool down the temperatures for a comfortable night’s sleep.
  • Sunday Funday: Our Session A Sunday Funday tradition is the Director’s Cup. Boys camp competed to represent Mac and girls camp competed for Melissa. It was a day of great competition and awesome bonding! The girls pulled through with a victory after a hard afternoon of battle! Way to go girls camp!
  • EP: Campfire was the perfect way to celebrate an amazing week at camp! We are so proud of our Honor Campers this week - Lily E. (Cabin 9), Valentina C (Cabin 1), Archer P (Cabin 25) & Andy A (Cabin 34). Our Honor Cabins for the week were Cabin 30 and Cabin 4! To top the night off, everyone enjoyed cookies and milk before bed.

Hello Camp Family!

We have had a very busy past few days at camp, and I got caught up in the madness and didn’t have time to write. As a camp director, there are many things to juggle and manage each and every day, and I love that no two days are the same. However, Saturday and Sunday felt like I was on a hamster wheel and something had to give…it was the blog. If you are a loyal follower, I am so sorry. I know that many of you meet me here every morning for coffee and the news, and I am grateful for you!

Our weekend was incredible! It is hard to describe the amount of fun that two days held for all of us. From sleeping in late, to donuts for breakfast, to a full day of our favorite activities, to a fabulous country fair, an extended rest hour on Sunday, Director’s Cup and Campfire…it was AWESOME! After a jam-packed weekend you would think the kids would be exhausted…NOT AT ALL!!! The energy and excitement was HUGE today at Camp Highlander!!

Cabins enjoyed a full day of activities, sunshine and making memories with their friends. In week two of camp, some cabins are scheduled for a camp activity for the second time, offering them an opportunity to sharpen their skills or work on a new project. Other activities they are trying for the first time this session. Every day is an adventure, and this is why I love our cabin unit! I love that campers can challenge themselves by trying new things, as well as discover new passions and hidden talents. The cabin unit provides a safe place for campers to fail and try again, persevering like Sam mentioned this morning at Reflect at the Rock.

Mardi Gras was so much fun tonight! Campers and staff LOVED the parade. Cabins lined the blacktop road through camp in their purple, green and gold costumes. As “floats” passed through camp and threw beads and gold coins to the crowds, I loved seeing the smiles on your children’s faces. While our parade was very simple, the campers made it feel like they were in the streets of New Orleans! It’s the campers and staff who make camp so magical! We plan the events, the programs, the meals, the adventures…but they embrace the experience! They give camp life, meaning and purpose, and I am so incredibly thankful that they are here with us this session. I told them all at the opening campfire, “there will never be another Session A 2022, so don’t waste it…make the most of every moment!” Well, they took the advice and continue to seize each day to experience the madness, magic and wonder of Camp Highlander.
