We believe that sports can bring out the best in our campers and that healthy competition is great for developing new skills. We have a long tradition of sports here at Camp Highlander. Whether it’s playing river ball on the land sports field, shooting hoops on the slab, or enjoying a game of tetherball during free time, the options are endless! And the summer of 2022 will bring even more!
With a new summer comes another opportunity for our campers to find a new sport to love. After many requests, we are excited to announce the addition of…Pickleball! This quick paced, tennis/ping pong hybrid will help our campers learn hand-eye coordination and teamwork skills. Campers of all ages will be able to pick up a racket and play on any of the three courts we are adding to Tenny Top. (Disclaimer: you do not have to enjoy pickles to play this game.)
Win with intergrity, lose with integrity
Next we travel down to the land sports field where we find another new game. Flickerball (a.k.a. worst sport ever invented.) If you don’t believe us, look it up for yourself! Now you may be asking, why would we ever want to have such a sport at camp. It is a complex mixture of soccer, football, and basketball with a vague rule book; what will kids get out of it? Well, the answer is found in why the sport was invented. When the United States Air Force adopted the game they used it to teach their cadets the importance of working together, adaptation, and attention to detail. Now don’t worry, we aren’t a military academy, but we do believe the principles of the game will help cabinmates create strong bonds using communication and teamwork. These new sports are great, and we aren’t done yet!
Highlander would like to formally invite all our campers to one of the most exclusive clubs in all Western North Carolina. That’s right, this summer our campers will be able to join the Highlander Disc Golf Club. Our existing course is getting a fresh update including new hole signs, new discs, and even a new hole location. Campers will get to enjoy the beautiful mountain landscape of camp while testing their disc golf skills. The Highlander Disc Golf Club will meet on camper choice days and is looking forward to welcoming its new members this summer!
Oh wait there’s more!
Remember the Alamo? We sure do, and we’ve got some big news for our intermediate boy campers. As you travel up to the Alamo this summer, you will be greeted by a basketball court that was designed just for you! So lace up your basketball shoes and turn up the Space Jam soundtrack because this summer is going to be a slam dunk!
