Sundays are AWESOME at camp! I love that they have a balance of quietly restful and wildly energetic. Sunday programming is meant to give our campers and staff time to recoup after a busy week of activities, off-camp trips and thrilling EPs, yet still have unforgettable fun that leaves lasting memories. The slower pace of the day offers less activity but more time for rest and building friendships.
After sleeping in this morning and a big breakfast, we gathered at the gym for chapel. Chapel has been a Sunday tradition at Camp Highlander since 1957. Typically, at chapel, we read a book with a moral lesson and break down that lesson with life application. Today’s book was Say Something, by by Peter H. Reynolds. Our lesson was a great reminder that we can say a lot more to others with our actions than with our words. We all agreed that words are powerful and can be used for good, but waht we say with our actions has great influence over others. We were encouraged to say something by standing up for a friend, refusing to gossip, listening and respecting our counselors or parents and including your cabinmate who feels left out. One kind voice can heal or transform the world.
After our extended rest hour, everyone was super excited for our Session A Sunday Funday tradtion: The Director’s Cup. This is an all-camp competition between boys camp and girls camp for the Golden Cup. Cabins were separated by neighborhoods to compete in a variety of fun games and challenges. Today’s events were bombardment, Nuke ‘Em, pool volleyball, longest slide (waterslide), kickball and scream game. Each cabin got the chance to stop by for Gus’to get candy or a soda, which made our Sunday even sweeter. The competition finale was a game of musical ice buckets with the leadership team. With Emily and Mac the as the last two standing, the Director’s Cup went to…Boys Camp!
After dinner every Sunday, we have a campfire to reflect on the week we just had and get excited for the week ahead. Tonight, we recognized our honor campers and honor cabins for the week. These are the highest honors an individual or a cabin unit can receive at camp.
Honor campers are nominated by their counselors for their kind and respectful nature, their selfless attitude in the cabin, their positive attitude about activities and their overall camp spirit. The activity counselors then vote on the campers based on their interaction and observation of those campers throughout the week.
Honor cabins are also voted on by activity counselors for their teamwork, cooperation, selflessness, generosity, joyful attitude and love shown to others. Honor cabins stand out as leaders on camp for their participation in Evening Programs, activities and camp events.
This week’s Honor Campers and Cabins:
- Lower Camp Girls: Ella D. from Cabin 17
- Lower Camp Boys: Gus F. from Cabin 24
- Upper Camp Girls: Annabelle K. from Cabin 9
- Upper Camp Boys: Jacques P. from Cabin 32

Favorite Details of the Day
- Meals: Breakfast was blueberry muffins with scrambled eggs, sausage and fruit. For lunch we had grilled cheese, tomato soup and a salad. Sunday night dinner was fried chicken, baked potatoes, green beans and kale salad.
- Weather: Last night we had some rain come with a tropical storm that was moving through the mountains. We woke up to wet grass and rain puddles, but no rain. Just as we entered the gym for chapel, the rain came pouring back down. By the time we left the cabin for rest hour, the sun was out again! As much as I hate rain during the summer, we really needed it after all the sunshine we’ve had this week!
- EP: Campfire is our Sunday night tradition. We enjoyed singing and dancing to our favorite camp tunes like BLT, Wagon Wheel, Vineyard, The Outlaw, Comfort Me and our Alma Mater, Going Home! After campfire, campers and staff head to the dining hall for the sweetest Sunday Tradition…cookies and milk! Yum and just so much fun!
