Every summer, on Tuesday night, we all come together for one of the best traditions at Camp Highlander, the Tuesday Night Square Dance!
I, Big Mac, recently came across a funny meme that I bet some of you have seen:
Funny, right? The song by Kenny Loggins is the cherry on top to an excellent Tuesday square dance! The energy, exhaustion and excitement that is put out on the dance floor is electric. Footloose was brought to camp by one of our amazing staff members, Audrey Filler back in the summer of 2006. Little did she know or any of us, how it would grow into the tradition that it is on Tuesday nights.
I have always loved dancing and so when Audrey taught me the steps in 2006 I felt right at home. Once you know the steps and are comfortable with all the heel taps and grape vines, then you can add your own style! Maybe you throw in a spin or a little shoulder dip, whatever it is you, can make it your own.
When I started calling square dances at camp I initially was a little sad about not being able to get to actually dance the square dance. However, what I found was that being able to call the dance and see everyone enjoy themselves, was even more rewarding!
So when it comes to the end of the night and we begin to hear that classic beat fill Gillespie Gymnasium - the moment we have all been waiting for - I get pumped to step on the floor and dance with all of you! Shouting “I can’t hear you” or encouraging us all to “Bring it Home” each night, gives me an excitement and joy I can’t explain in writing.
My wish is that every Tuesday night at camp you experience that joy and energy and truly love “maybe” getting a little sweaty, even though we all know
“If you are sweating…you’re doing it wrong!”
Wherever you are, a school dance, a college function, or a wedding, Footloose will dazzle and amaze anybody that is with you! And just maybe you are spreading joy to those around you with your awesome dance moves!
