We have had a really great, super busy, totally awesome day! I love that on Sundays at camp we change up the schedule to allow less structured time and more free play for our campers. This usually means lots of hanging out in hammocks, enjoying meaningful chats with friends and catching up on rest.
During the school year, I find myself dreading Sundays that are filled with homework, projects and last minute prep before another busy week at school and work. However, Sundays at camp are the best! Not only do we enjoy the simple pleasures of summer and being outside, but Sundays are the days we get our schedule for the next week, learn about the new EPs to come and look forward to making more incredible memories with our friends. This morning we were able to sleep in until 9:00 and then enjoy fresh pancakes and sausage for breakfast. After breakfast, we had chapel, where we read “Say Something” by Peter Reynolds. We talked about the book’s message that a single voice can make a difference. Each of us, each and every day, have the chance to say something: with our actions, our words, and our voices. We talked about what we say with our actions that we don’t even realize, and we encouraged campers to think about how they can better say what they mean and mean what they say. It was a powerful message to hear as we are all reminded that our lives have purpose and can impact others for good if we just say something.
Chapel was followed by camp clean up and group games. Then we had grilled cheese, french fries, tomato soup and salad bar for lunch which was followed by an extra long rest hour. Our Sunday Funday activities started at 3:30. In Upper Camp, the boys had a bombardment tournament while I taught a zumba class for the girls in the gym for the first hour. The second hour was an Upper Camp social with boys and girls just hanging out and talking with friends. The LOVE this so much! Lower Camp had a water play day on the field with a slip-n-slide, inflatable water slide, ultimate frisbee, soccer and kickball. They enjoyed some cold ice cream sandwiches for National Ice Cream day today!
Dinner was roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, haricot verts, stuffing, homemade rolls and salad bar. For dessert we had homemade apple pie with of course…ice cream! After dinner we had campfire, and after about 6 songs it started to rain. We quickly announced the honor campers and cabins and then raced up to the dining hall for our Sunday night tradition of cookies and milk before bed. Since we were all in the dining hall, Btyan and I decided to continue our campfire there. We fired up the speaker and played some of the campfire favorites from Spotify…Brown Eyed Girl, Sweet Caroline, Country Roads, Vineyard and then we finished up with an all time camp favorite - Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing. It wasn’t campfire, but it was a memory we will never forget. These are the simple joys of camp and these are the moments that make Sundays simply wonderful!
