Today we jumped in feet first. Campers were all in because today was camper’s choice day. Today campers were able to choose their activities, choose their schedule and even choose to spend time with friends from other cabins. Everyone feels independent and autonomous on camper’s choice days, and I love the smiles on their faces watching each camper do exactly what they want to do.
On camper’s choice days many campers opt for a slower paced day to relax and enjoy the relationships they are building with friends, while others compete in the Highlander Basketball Association league games. Campers also have the opportunity to go on off-camp trips or work on their progressive skills and achievements towards their Master of the Mills (our highest achievement in a particular activity). Most campers choose to do activities with friends, but others will sign up alone in pursuit of their personal goals, growth and interests.
Favorite Details of the Day
- Reflect at the Rock: Beth talked about integrity today, quoting Thomas Jefferson, “In matters of principle, stand like a rock; in matters of taste, swim with the current.” She challenged us to be the best version of ourselves at camp and live each day with integrity.
- Meals: Breakfast was bagels, cream cheese, scrambled eggs, sausage and fruit bar. Lunch was corndogs, tater tots and salad bar. Dinner was cookout - hamburgers, chips, pasta salad, watermelon and chocolate chip cookies!
- EP: Talent Show!
- Weather: The weather was beautiful all day, but just as cookout was ending the rain started to fall. There is a storm system coming through our area, so we expect more rain over the next couple of days.
Tonight we had the Session B talent show, and I was so proud of all of our talented and courageous campers. Talk about jumping in feet first! I heard every single act say before they went up how nervous they were, but they all did it and killed it if you ask me! The crowd showed tremendous support with overwhelming cheers, clapping and even singing along. My favorite part of tonight was when two precious girls sang The Star Spangled Banner, and the crowd could not hold their pride for their country. They all rose to their feet and joined in with enthusiasm. I had goosebumps! I just can’t wait for tomorrow’s July 4th celebration. Check out the video below and enjoy a few clips from tonight’s performances.
