The cabin unit is the heart and soul of the Camp Highlander culture. It fosters a sense of belonging and value in each and every one of it’s campers. It provides a safety net for healthy risk-taking and comfort for campers to feel loved and supported just the way they are.
Thanks to technology and innovation, you have a window into the world of camp each day through the photos we post. These photos show new friendships being made, the pride of a completed art project or the thrill of flying down the zipline. However, these photos can’t possibly tell the whole story of Kickoff Camp 2019. There are deeper lessons, valuable life skills and personal achievements happening every moment of every day, and these are the things that make camp a priceless experience.
Favorite Details of the Day:
- Reflect at the Rock: Today at Reflect I talked about Courage - not the superhero kind of courage, but the every day kind of courage we practice at camp. Courage is saying hello to someone you don’t know, trying a new food in the dining hall, forgiving a friend when they hurt your feelings, facing your fear of the blob or standing up for a friend. Courage is waiting to be discovered all over camp, and when you find courage, you will find joy, laughter, happiness and the best version of yourself.
- Meals: Breakfast was french toast sticks, eggs and sausage links. Lunch was tacos with homemade guacamole. Dinner was baked ziti, green beans, garlic bread and cookies for dessert.
- EP: Mission Impossible! Each cabin was given a Top Secret clue at dinner to help them solve the impossible mission. They dressed in disguise and set out to find the thief on camp. They had to complete challenges to earn more clues and travel around discreetly so they didn’t get caught. In the end, Cabin 29 took home the victory and the EP trophy!
- Weather: Rain…it was back today, but not as bad as yesterday. There were dry spots during the day, and we were grateful that one of those was during our camp-wide panorama photo(followed by popsicles)! Whew! The good news is that the rain should be over for the rest of the week. Yay!
Today, I saw acts of selflessness, generosity, compassion, forgiveness, grace and love from each of our cabins. It was awesome! I witnessed their realization that this camp experience is more about the group than the individual. Our campers feel part of a team, part of something bigger than themselves, and there is a genuine desire within each cabin to be united. I saw campers rooting for one another to reach their goals, putting arms around one another to comfort and encouraging one another to try their best and give their all. As a cabin group, we live, work and play together each and every day, and as a TEAM, we accomplish more than we ever could alone.
