At some point in life everyone feels like an outsider. As a camp director I’ve heard many times “but I’m not”… from the same school, from the same city, good at sports, like everyone else, fill in the blank.

At Camp Highlander, not being something is the exact point because it just doesn’t matter. Here we are a family that loves others right where they are, for who they are. Our campers are confident to say “this is me” and know that “me” is all they have to be.

Today was camper’s choice day, and we saw lots of campers showing us exactly who they are, what they love and where their talents lie. We saw an abundance of smiles and overflowing happiness from every department on camp. There were even some special off-camp trips to the Farmer’s Market, tubing on the Mills River and kayaking on the Green River that brought great stories of adventure to our campers’ day.

Favorite Details of the Day:

• Sleep In Saturday - Today our campers received 3 gifts from camp…no cabin inspection, Krispy Kreme Donuts for breakfast, late wake-up (8:45) and late breakfast (9:15). We had some HAPPY CAMPERS this morning! When we told them last night at dinner about Sleep In Saturday, the screams were deafening. They were so excited! It’s the simplest things that make them happy!
• Meals - Breakfast was donuts, fruit bar, oatmeal and grits. Lunch was corndogs, curly fries, salad bar. Dinner was chicken pot pie and salad.
• EP - The signature EP of Session B - the Monte Carlo Carnival!
• Weather - We had another afternoon of showers here, but the smiles from the photos prove that it doesn’t slow us down!

I mentioned in an earlier blog that our theme of the summer is The Greatest Showman. Like camp, this movie emphasizes the importance of self love and acceptance. Tonight as we complete our 4th week of camp and mark the halfway point of the summer, we celebrated this theme with our annual Session B tradition, Monte Carlo.
