After three days together, the cabins seem to be in the routine of camp. Our first-year campers are no longer “new” to camp. They have found comfort in their cabin, their new friends and on our beautiful mountain. One thing that all campers, new or old, enjoy most about the Camp Highlander schedule is Free Time.

Free Time for campers is before lunch and before dinner every day. This time is like gold to them! They cherish those thirty minutes twice a day and definitely don’t waste it. Many campers race to the ping-pong tables, the camp store or the slab to play basketball. Sometimes the girls will sit in a circle and paint their nails. I love to see how the simple choice of what to do with free time is teaching our campers a little about decision making, priorities and time management. This free play is building life skills that will last beyond their one week here.

PLAY is the work of childhood.

Details of the Day:

Today is Wednesday, which is laundry day (we are hoping to send some clean clothes home too)! We started the morning with the Cookie Face Challenge at our Minute to Win It assembly, and boys camp took the first victory for the summer!

  • Breakfast - Biscuits, eggs, sausage and fresh fruit bar
  • Lunch - Turkey and Cheese Pastry Puffs, Apples and Potato Chips
  • Dinner - Baked Ziti, roasted broccoli and salad bar

We had sunshine all morning and campers enjoyed their activities. After lunch, there was an afternoon shower that provided wonderful backgound noise for a nap. And at 2:15pm, the skies cleared just in time for snack and an afternoon full of fun activities!

Tonight’s EP was absolutely fantastic! The Gillespie Gymnasium was converted into a Renaissance Fair where campers dressed as knights and princesses who wandered freely to enjoy jousting, archery, potions at the apothecary, the hat shoppe, the tomato toss at the pillary, arm wrestling, and more. Campers and staff certianly shared a knight to remember! (Check out the trailer below)
