We are so proud of the activities we offer at Camp Highlander and the exciting adventure that they provide our campers every day. We always say that it is not WHAT you are doing, it is WHO you are doing it with that matters! Our cabin unit and our amazing staff are what give these activities life, but WHAT we do is also important. It is important to you the parent, to the leadership of camp and definitely to our campers.
Each fall we conduct an off-season evaluation of every activity, noting the feedback we received from campers, parents and staff, their impact on individual growth and their alignment with our mission. During this evaluation, there were a couple of activities that we chose to close and a few activities we chose to add to our camp program. We believe that this process of revamping and even removing activities from our offerings is one of the things that distinguishes Camp Highlander as a premier summer camp.
After discussing our camp newspaper activity, The BLT (Blue Ridge Life and Times), we decided that this process of writing articles was no longer engaging our campers the way we wanted it to. While this activity was excellent for practicing communication skills and creativity, it was not able to involve the entire cabin unit. Our new format, the WBLT, allows our campers to participate together as a creative team while still promoting individual talents and tackling all the challenges that this medium provides. Our campers have the opportunity to collaborate and showcase their passions with the WBLT. We use writers, actors, producers and a camera crew to promote the same goals of communication and creativity that we have always strived to instill with this program.
Shoutout to our fantastic, talented and creative Activity Counselor, Steele Tinsley, who has taken on this new adventure with joy, enthusiasm and great success. And of course, none of this would be possible without the eager attitudes from our campers.
We hope you enjoy the first edition of the new WBLT, where the campers bring the news to you!
