It’s a beautiful day in Western North Carolina and the perfect day for some ice cream!!! As campers lie in their beds, the breeze of the afternoon sweeps through the cabin. It’s 3:00, and everyone is waiting for the 3:15 snack bell in anticipation of the fun afternoon of activities we have planned on this beautiful sunny day. All of the sudden, one camper says, “Is that the ice cream truck?”
“The Entertainer” is playing through camp, and campers start to run out of their cabins like ants from an ant pile for the greatest afternoon surprise that they can remember. They look at me in awe! “For real? Ice cream? For us? Why?” Smiles are beaming from their faces as some campers say, “I’ve never seen an ice cream truck before. I’ve heard about one, but never seen one.”
I sit back and watch as they stare at all the choices, bomb pops, snow cones, Italian ice, ice cream sandwiches, batman bars and more. Like a proud parent, I beam when I hear the campers say to their friend, “You can go first,” and as every single campers says “Thank you so much” to the ice cream man.
This is what makes Camp Highlander “A Place Like No Other.” The magic is made in little moments like these, when the simple pleasure of ice cream can make the day of a child. There is no greater joy for me than to watch these moments happen day after day, cabin after cabin, camper after camper. This is why a summer camp experience is the greatest gift you can give your child.
“Why?” The campers kept asking. Why…just to see you smile! These smiles make my day.
The appreciation is owed to our parents who make these moments possible for your child and for all of us here at Camp Highlander. We are proud to be loving and serving your campers, and we look forward our last exciting week of Session B 2014.
