By most accounts, it was a wet, dreary night in Western North Carolina. The Mills swelled with water. Rain that began with a ping on the metal roof of Gillespie Gymnasium soon turned into a racketing clatter. Though it may have seemed gloomy outside of that old barn-turned-gym, there was no trace of such feelings for those who were held within its walls. The feelings were of joy; they were of love; and they were of belonging. It didn’t matter what the weather was like outside, because inside they were all finally home.
The first Campfire of 2013 was a magical night. Bruce Threlkeld played all the traditional favorites, as well as some new tunes, in a lantern-lit gym. There was singing, dancing, and music as Gaynell welcomed all to Session A – 2013. Torches were lit to honor the Highlander Creed: courage, honesty, integrity, and faith. As the final tune of Taps faded into the night sky, campers returned with their new-found brothers and sisters to await the start of another day. The feeling of family throughout the evening was truly overwhelming. But, you know what they say… When it rains, it pours.
Until next time,
One Love
