“I’ve worked at other camps before, but it’s NOTHING like this! You guys do it right!” Those are words spoken by one of our new staff members here at Camp Highlander. While the person who said them may be new to our mountain, the words have become familiar ones. All who come to call Camp Highlander home know the slogan, “A Place Like No Other,” isn’t really a slogan at all. It’s just the easiest way to explain the deep, emotional connection people seem to develop during their time here.
For the last six days, the amazing Camp Highlander Staff of 2013 have been preparing to give the campers of 2013 the absolute best summer of their lives. Though six days may seem a very short time to prepare, you would be surprised at how quickly a large group of young adults, some new and some returning, collates into something much more than a staff. Simply put, they are now brothers; they are sisters; they are FAMILY.
So before we officially kick-off summer 2013 with the arrival of our campers on Sunday, here are a few things for both parents and campers to know about the Camp Highlander Staff of 2013.
FOR CAMPERS:
This staff is FUN. Not just the “oh let’s go play a game” kind of fun. I’m talking about the kind of fun that you can only have with someone who really tries to get to know you. Have you ever known someone who can take a boring situation and turn it into the best time of your life? Well… we do too. We know over 75 of them. And they are going to be your counselors all summer long. I saw the whole lot of them dive to sit in one of four buckets filled with ice-cold water, just to call their gender number one. I have also seen old staff members welcome new ones like they had known each other for ages. But most importantly, each and every one of them is SUPER EXCITED to meet YOU!
FOR PARENTS:
This staff is RESPONSIBLE. Maybe at other camps, their staff comes looking for either a job, or a vacation… Neither is an acceptable purpose, which is why none of our staff are here with that intention. They’re here because they genuinely care about making a difference in the lives of children, and they have the skills and competencies to make it all happen. They are a staff who cares more about keeping your child safe than looking cool. Like so many times before on this mountain, we have assembled a staff worthy of the name HIGHLANDER, and they are ready to lead.
Til next time, One Love everybody.
